Frequently Asked Questions from Prospective Firefighters
District residence:
You must have a verifiable full-time address within Snohomish County
Fire District #4 by the date of Firefighter testing. Please bring
verification of your address to the test. Examples of this are a
driver’s license, utility bill or rental agreement.
Time commitment:
There is no specific number of hours a firefighter must commit to
Snohomish Fire & Rescue (SF&R). Nevertheless, the amount of time
required to complete the requirements of a Volunteer Firefighter is
substantial. SF&R sets some of these standards but most come from the
State and Federal Governments. This time commitment does not diminish
after recruit training. Most Volunteer Firefighters spend 20 - 100 hours per month at SF&R. Please consider carefully the impact this
will have on you and your family. There are times that you may be late
for your primary employment due to incident response. Please talk with
your employer about this important issue.
Attendance:
Every session of Recruit Training is very important. For this reason
recruits are expected to have no unexcused absences. An absence is
excused when the Training Division has been contacted in advance.
Recruits are also expected to arrive early enough to be in the
classroom, ready to learn when class is scheduled to begin.
Driving
and Background Checks: Because we are entrusted by the public to
take care of them and drive their vehicles, all prospective Firefighters
must pass a Washington State Patrol background check and a driving
record abstract. If you have convictions involving children, the elderly
or assault we are not able to accept you as a member of SF&R. If you
have more than three moving or any serious violation on your driving record in the past 2 years we
will not be able to accept you as a member.
Training Standards:
Recruit Training is made up of two equally
important parts. Classroom sessions and Hands-on Sessions. Proficiency
in both areas is required to complete recruit training.
Classroom training includes
reading the assignments and passing a weekly quiz. In the event a
recruit does not pass a quiz they will have an opportunity to take the
quiz one more time. If the recruit does not pass the second time they
will be withdrawn for the program. The recruits will also be given a
Midterm and Final exam.
Hands-on training
allows the recruit to practice the skills they learned in classroom
training. The recruit is expected to practice these skills until they
can complete the task, safely, in a specified amount of time.
